From country houses opening city outposts to family owned boltholes, these British hotels are raring to go

Artist Residence, Bristol

Once an old boot factory, the latest of the Artist Residence boltholes is five-minutes from Bristol city centre. If the other properties in the collection are anything to go by expect plenty of vintage quirks. As well as 23 bedrooms there will be a neighbourhood hangout with a coffee shop, bar, kitchen, event space and garden.

Henry’s Townhouse, Marylebone

This Marylebone gem, which was once the home of Jane Austen’s brother, is a special addition to central London’s hotel offerings. Russell Sage Studio has added bundles of character to the seven bedrooms, secret bar and pantry. It can be hired exclusively or functions as a cosy boutique hotel. Households welcome from April 12 2021.

The Broadwick, Soho

Interior design guru Martin Brudnizki, whose iconic projects include the fabulous scheme at Annabel’s, is embarking on his first hotel venture in London. In the heart of Soho, there will be a rooftop cocktail bar and some of the 57 rooms come with private balconies. This is destined to be a glamorous affair. Opening autumn 2021.

The Farmyard at The Newt, Somerset

Not a new hotel as such but an array of extra sleeping options at the sprawling estate in Somerset. Nestled in a hidden valley just beyond the cyder orchards, the former dairy farm’s original buildings, with a delightfully golden patina, are home to seventeen bedrooms, a pool, bar, snug and all-day kitchen. Bikes and buggies provide ample opportunity for exploring the gardens and the spa at Hadspen House.  Opening Summer 2021.

The Yard in Bath

Fourteen bedrooms that promise to ooze character set around an historic courtyard. Once a coaching inn, the hotel has been restored with each room given a signature look. There is a space for coffee and a gentle wine bar that will extend into the courtyard in the summer months. Opening June 1 2021.

Beaverbrook Townhouse, Chelsea

The rather divine country house hotel in Leatherhead is set to open a city outpost with the same name. It is in the process of transforming two Georgian townhouses into fourteen suites with a Japanese restaurant and bar to boot. Nicola Harding, who designed the Rose hotel in Deal and the Mitre in Hampton Court is working her magic. Opening tbc.

No.15 Great Pulteney by GuestHouse, Bath

A debut project by new hospitality brand GuestHouse, this is a reimagining of a Bath classic on one of England’s most quintessential streets. Designer Martin Hulbert is behind the interiors. There is also a spa and a restaurant. Look out for the vinyl record players and Georgian doll houses that double up as help-yourself pantries, stocked with local goodies. Open from May 17 2021.

The Double Red Duke, Clanfield

The latest offering from husband and wife duo duo Sam and Georgie Pearman who are connoisseurs in conjuring up that Cotswolds lifestyle. This time they have revamped a 16th Century guesthouse to include 19 bedrooms and a menu centred around an open-fire kitchen. Opening May 17 2021.

The Star, Alfriston

Interior designer Olga Polizzi and her daughter Alex (aka The Hotel Inspector) have teamed up to open The Star is at the centre of a medieval village in East Sussex. Its 16th century frontage with an ancient beamed bar opens straight off the high street. Behind it is a small library and large restaurant, all of which lead to a newly formed courtyard. Opening June 2021.

Graduate Hotels, Oxford & Cambridge

The US hospitality group, which locates its properties in dynamic university towns, is coming to the UK with Oxford and Cambridge as its first openings. The smart thinking is that the culture and history of each city inspires the look and feel of the small but well-formed hotels. Anyone from the school of life is welcome. Opening summer 2021.

The Harper, Norfolk

Be it a weekend break or longer stay, the 32 bedrooms and spa are styled to feel homely and calm. This is a deliberate attempt to break away from the traditional country house. Housed in an old brick and flint-built barn which was once home to Langham Glass (a cottage industry that outgrew its premises as glassblowing blossomed), the structure stands strong but there is a modern spin on things. THE PIG-in the South Downs

The every growing litter is pitching up along the coast in West Sussex and taking over the Grade II-listed Madehurst Lodge near Arundel. Dating back to the 1770s, this house benefits from high ceilings with an abundance of natural light. As with each of The PIGs, food will be at the very heart of things. Opening summer 2021.

Mayfair Townhouse

The people behind Cliveden House and Chewton Glen have introduced a fun London instalment which is described as an ‘Oscar Wilde meets Alice in Wonderland’ experience. Designers Goddard Littlefair have taken inspiration from the Dandy era. Every corner has been accounted for with a bar and restaurant that will no doubt buzz as soon as the doors open. Opening May 17 2021.
